About Students

Myrla C. Gibbons Doxey

Myrla was born in Houston, Texas on Christmas Eve 1978.  A year later she and her family moved to Lockport, New York where she was raised.  Myrla graduated, a year early, from Royalton-Hartland Central High School in Middleport, New York in June of 1996.  She ranked third out of 126 students in her class.

While working as a full-time employee for Wal-Mart, Myrla enrolled as a full-time student in college and received her B.A. in Psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo in December 2000.  She graduate cum laude and was a member of Psi Chi, the Psychology National Honors Society.  She is a first year graduate student in the Human Development and Psychological Counseling Department and is working toward her M.A. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Currently she is working as a graduate assistant for Dr. L. Art Safer in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies.

On August 7, 1999, Myrla married her high school sweetheart, Michael A. Doxey.  He is a very loving and supportive husband who works in retail management.  Together they are active church goers who, while in New York, attend the Lockport Assembly of God Church, and, while in North Carolina, attend Boone's Central Assembly of God Church.

Myrla is very close with her extended family.  She loves cooking Italian dishes and baking with her grandmother and mother, working at her uncle's winery in Newfane, New York called "Chiappone Cellars Winery, Inc.", being active in the outdoors with her grandfather and father, and playing with her three-year-old, Black Labrador Retriever, "Joey".

Some other favorite activities that Myrla enjoys outside of college are writing poetry, exercising, and watching romantic movies.

Looking ahead into the future, Myrla's long term goals are to establish a successful, private Marriage and Family Therapy practice and have a family of her own.
