Learning Plane Shapes 2nd Grade

This is a math unit used to review plane shapes and introduce solid shapes.  Various lessons will be used to teach students about the kinds of shapes, properties, and their value in the world.  Through hands-on activities, students will manipulate and understand plane and solid shapes.

This unit has been developed for second grade students.

Learning Targets:

Students will be able to give the correct names for plane and solid shapes.

This is a cognitive learning target requiring declarative knowledge from students.  It is important for students to accomplish this target because they need to be confident in naming and discussing shapes.

Students will be able to distinguish between plane and solid shapes.

This is also a cognitive learning target requiring procedural knowledge.  Bloom’s category of analysis would classify this target.  Learning this target is important not only to distinguish between shapes but also to set up an understanding of how to analyze items and note differences.

Students will be able to recognize solid shapes in the everyday items they use.

This cognitive learning target accesses procedural knowledge and would be categorized in the evaluation level of Bloom’s taxonomy.  Students need an understanding of this target to help them comprehend how to relate learning to the environment around them.
