5220: Computers in Educational Settings
SESSION 6: Representing
Information
- Concept Maps;
- Simulations;
- Micro-worlds;
- Hypermedia
Knowledge may be acquired by developing cognitive
frameworks upon which to hang "data" or "facts". We can
structure learning environments in ways to assist students in building these
organizational knowledge structures. Students can use technology tools that
build and display information structures in the forms of concept maps,
simulations, micro-worlds and hypermedia. It is through the interaction of the
students, rather than the teacher, working with the the tools and information
(knowledge base) that builds these structures.
Concept Maps
-
Using one of the technology
tools with which you are familiar, create a concept map of the project you
are developing for this class and present it to a small group of
people. Inspiration is an excellent example of software designed for
this but a word processor could also be used.
-
Explore some notions of concept
mapping, theory of and how
to construct them, a free beta
mapping tool, kinds
of concept maps, an
example. You may want to do a web search for other information
concerning concept mapping, software, and uses.
-
Work within a small group of 2-3
students in class and develop a concept map of this course to this point.
-
Create an assignment within your
project for your students to create and use a concept map of the information
they are learning.
Simulations
-
Find some interesting simulations
on the web that can be used with your students and that allow the
students to manipulate variables. Some
characteristics
are listed here.
-
You might start by exploring
several of the ones at this site.
This Maryland HS has an interesting project on stream
modeling. Edusim
has several for sale. Several teacher
sites. Basic math modeling has lead to interesting population
studies.
Microworlds
-
Explore the idea of micro-worlds
on the web. You may want to start with some characteristics.
One site that may be interesting to you is http://www.cybergeography.org/atlas/muds_vw.html. It shows the power of MUD's to engage folks world-wide in problem solving
and mind exercising activities..(though we may call them games).
-
LCSI
has some interesting projects developed by students and teachers (you have
to download some software). MIT
and U.of Maine developed some ideas and examples of several kinds of
micro-worlds. The RAND
organization has created some interesting examples of micro-world use.
-
Explore Edu-Verse's Active
Worlds as
example of micro-worlds folks are building for education. You have to get the
browser installed on your machine. You can get one at http://www.activeworlds.com/edu/awedu.asp
.Click on "download free browser" (It only works on PC's)
Proceed with the installation. Once installed you can explore all the worlds that
are available there ( in the left column, click on the earth symbol named
worlds). These are usually indicated by the color green. You might enjoy the
one named Curie which teaches genetics. Van Gogh also has an interesting
one. VTour is a 2001 e-conference on micro-worlds and has some abstracts
worth looking at.
Check the IT courses we have created in active worlds by
downloading the ASU browser at http://www.lesn.appstate.edu/appedtech/download.htm
....let me know when you do this and I will give you a password and username
to enter.....
-
Read a short description of current
research at one institution to gain insight on the possible use of this
technology in our schools.
-
Discuss ways that micro-worlds
such as visual worlds might enhance learning environments.
Hypermedia
-
Describe the concept of
hypermedia and ways it might differ from multimedia. Do this in small groups
by developing a concept map using Inspiration to present your
ideas.
-
Discuss the hypermedia aspects
of your class project with another group.
