CLOSURE #1
BALTO
The students will write a newspaper article about the heroics and historical significance of Balto.
Book: The Bravest Dog Ever - The True Story of Balto, by Natalie Standiford..
DESCRIPTION:
1. Discuss the book as a class relating back to the book. The book mentioned the sled-dog teams that raced across Alaska in the winter of 1925 to deliver medicine to the town of Nome.
2.Since the book is about the lead dog of one sled-dog team that helped deliver the medicine brainstorm the most important details in the story.
3.The students will then write a newspaper article.
4. Newspaper article should include main characters, setting, actions, problem, solution and an interesting title. Remember that the dates should correspond to those mentioned in the book.
5. Answer this question- Why is this of historic significance?
CLOSURE #2
Balto and Stone Fox
As a closing activity, have the students watch both the film versions of Stone Fox and Balto.
Have students write the differences and similarities that they notice from the book and the films while they watch.
After the students have watched both of the films they will fill out a Venn Diagram noticing all of the comparisons and the contrasts that were found.
