Example 2

  1. Page 21, paragraph 1

  1. “Royce’s cheeks……….cherry drops.”

  1. This is a simile.  This passage is a simile because it uses as to describe Royce’s face. “Royce’s cheeks got as red as cherry drops.”  It helps you imagine in a way how he looks at that particular moment.  This is used because it gives you a better idea than just saying his face was red, it also sounds better.  You can see the cherry drop cheeks by reading this passage.

  1. What does Royce’s face look like?  Why would his face turn that color?  Have you ever been in a situation that Royce was in?   It turned red because he was embarrassed.  I get embarrassed easily so I am always faced with that situation.  Especially when I get called on in class when I don’t know the answer.

  1. Answer the following questions; Why would the author say “as red as cherry drops instead of red.”  What is important about this scene?   It sounds better and gives you a better picture when you compare things.  This scene is important because Royce is the bully and never appears to be embarrassed or emotional about anything.

Example 3

  1. Page 28-29, paragraph 11

  1. “I don’t ……..hate her!”

  1. Surprising.  This passage is surprising because Cody and Quinn are good friends.  I would never think that he would say anything bad to Quinn or about Quinn. Cody is a good friend and sensitive too but it doesn’t show with this statement.
  2. Why does Cody say that about Quinn?  What does he want to accomplish? He wants to make Royce stop teasing him about Quinn.

Example 4

  1. Think about your time in school.  Have you ever said something and regretted it later because it hurt someone?  Tell about it briefly.  Once I was mean to a girl and snapped at her.  It hurt her feelings and I felt bad.  I apologized later, but always wished I had never done it.

  1. Page 12, paragraph 2

  1. “Royce sat……like popcorn”

  1. My choice.  I like this passage because it has a great simile in it.  “Some of it stuck in her hair like popcorn.”  It’s funny to me because I picture a little girl with popcorn in her hair and can see how paper bits can look like that.

  1. Why does Royce always seem to be antagonizing people?  What do people do in response to Royce? He doesn’t want to do his work, I think.  They always tell him to go away.

  1. Have you ever been picked on?  Have you ever been a bully?  How did it feel? I have been bullied and it felt really bad.  I was pushed in to lockers and called names and it made me feel terrible.  I was hurt, scared, and embarrassed.
