  1. The class is atwitter.

 

  1. Verb, chattering or talking in a fast manner.

 

  1. Atwitter means to chat or talk.

 

  1. The author used the word atwitter because it is better to use as a description instead of just saying that the class is talking.  It is an easy word to remember and it is helping increase students vocabulary at the same time.

 

Third Example

  1. Vigorous, p.14, par. 3.

 

  1. A few shook their heads in vigorous denial.

 

  1. Adjective, strong or forceful.

 

  1. Using a forceful, energetic or strong motion.

 

  1. The word vigorous shows us how the students were reacting to a situation.  Vigorous is a great word explaining what kind of denial the students were feeling at that time.  The author was trying to create a mental picture of how the class acted so in the future we can remember what they are like at times.

 

Fourth Example

  1. Hazardous, p. 30, par.6.

 

  1. Eating becomes hazardous.

 

  1. Adjective, dangerous.

 

  1. A risky, dangerous or unsafe problem.

 

  1. This is a great word that is repeated in the book because there are situations that arise that are dangerous throughout the book.  This word adds meaning to the story because it helps describe a situation that happens over and over again.
