This interdisciplinary study on the moon is important because it allows students to gain a greater understanding of the world in which they live in. It allows students to think outside of their own community, and expand their thinking to include the entire universe. Through this unit students will learn how to write rhyming couplets, the proper format for writing a letter, and how to metacognitively reflect about their reading. Students will also take leadership roles and work cooperatively. Since this unit is designed for a specific reading level fluency, rate, and comprehension skills will be improved. Through the text in the unit students will make observations and learn about patterns of the moon, and other objects in the sky. This unit is appropriate for third grade students because it aligns to the NCSCS objectives for third grade science. Instead of reading about space in the textbook, students are able to learn about space from literature that is on their instructional reading level. At the end of the unit, students should have a greater understanding of space, particularly the moon. Students should learn about astronauts and historical landings on the moon.
