FDN 5220: Computers in Educational Settings

TASKS

Student Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in class and online discussions concerning issues and topics presented.  This will include research into topics outside of text materials and responsibility for presenting and sharing information with other class members.
  2. Complete three (3) mini projects, one in each of the following areas:
  • Developing hypermedia learning environments
  • Integrating computer technology into learning environments
  • Planning for the future

Actual topic and scope of each project will be negotiated between participants and the instructor.  These projects may be completed in collaborative groups.

Group Responsibilities:

  1. A weekly summary of individual or group progress e-mailed to the instructor or posted to the discussion board
  2. Identification of group roles
  3. Lead and contribute to class discussions
  4. Present information and leading discussions on topics each session
  5. Plan to visit at least one model educational site that uses technology as a cornerstone for its instructional program.  Where are these sites and what is happening there?  Could we use our teleconferencing equipment to assist us in communicating/working with educators and students at this site?
  6. Create a series of learning activities for your courses that require students to engage each of the major tools (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, telecommunications, and hypermedia).  Attempt to involve your students to the fullest extent possible.  Feel free to engage them in helping you to develop these activities.  As you develop this project, you will also learn the technology tools and how to apply them.  These activities should include:
  • A problem to solve
  • Knowledge to structure
  • Assurance that each group member will achieve competence with each type of tool
  • Requirements for collecting, analyzing, and making decisions about the content learned
  • Requirements for active collaboration within and between groups of students

These projects will be presented to the entire class at the end of the semester.

  1. Conduct interviews with public school teachers and leaders in order to complete a needs assessment for course and training program development mandated by the NC State Board of Education.  This may include visiting several school sites.
