Little House in the Big Woods

By Laura Ingalls Wilder

This story takes place in the woods of Wisconsin during the late 1870's. Laura tells of her adventures throughout the year with her family in her first book called Little House in the Big Woods. She has a Ma and Pa as well as a sister Mary and baby sister Carrie who live in a small and cozy house in the big woods. Each season calls for different activities and ways of life for this family. In the Fall Pa is hard at work gathering food and killing animals for the winter time. Once Winter comes the family stays inside for most of the time to stay warm. This is the opportunity for Pa to relax after all his hard work. He plays his fiddle each night before the children go to bed. He also tells many stories from when he was a boy and of his adventures in the big woods. The girls enjoy his stories, but once Spring arrives they are excited to play outside again. They even venture into town to the store. This is a huge experience for the girls to see. They enjoy it very much. They are even more excited when it is Summer time. During the warmer months they often travel through the big woods to visit friends and family. This story allows the reader to experience the many different ways of life during the 1870's and what families did during each season throughout the year.
