Description/Rationale:  The main book for this unit is a fictitious journal about a young boy who travels with Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition to discover the American West.  The book is on a high 5^th grade level but can be taught to lower level 5^th graders with some modifications.  The Journal of Augustus Pelletier is a great opportunity to introduce students to primary source materials and this unit can be integrated with all subjects: math and measurement, social studies and geography, science and biology, even art and music.
